Chippendale Style

The English cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale illustrated furniture in the Chinese, Gothic, and French styles. Thomas Chippendale is well known for his publication, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Makers Director in 1754. His book was translated in several languages that made Chippendale famous worldwide.

Chippendale's decorative designs were immensely popular in both England and America, where his new and fashionable style supplanted Queen Anne style and flourished in the metropolitan centers of Boston, Newport, New York, and Philadelphia, where Colonial craftsmen feely copied and adapted its various elements.

Chippendale operated a shop in London from 1745 until his death in 1777, afterwhich his son took over. Chippendale furniture was generally made with mahogany wood. His name was synonymous with rococo style, but, Chippendale is also well known for many other styles including chinoiserie.
